Yep. Lifestyle discipline. There is no other way.  As she said in an interview “she abstains from dairy and bread flour. She juggles the carbs, fats and proteins depending on the days of the week.  Just a reminder, if you are counting, there are seventy-two days till the end of the year.

Angela says she sticks to her workout regimen ― cardio on Monday and Tuesday, strength training on Wednesday and Thursday – because she pays a trainer “so I will show up ’cause I don’t want to waste my money.”  Angela Bassett Shows How Her Discipline Pays Off Big Time At Age 60

And finally, she reports, “I don’t do yoga.”

Two things some may say to that, 1) “who cares what Angela Bassett does with her trainer” and 2) “why the heck is this relevant to Pilates?”

Might not be relevant if you are not “on show all the time” or do not consider  yourself a “public persona.”  Yep, it might not be that important to you, if you are a 35+ year old woman and don’t consider a 60+ year old superstar as role model for you or your lifestyle.  It could be difficult to consider a “maintenance” schedule such as the one she has listed as optimal or do-able if you are running around after a three-year old every day.

However, from my vantage point, and considering the hundreds of women from 25 to 85 years of age that I have worked with over the years, I have to say, everything the sister said is absolutely relevant and on point.  Except the skipping Yoga part.  #IJS

I also have a lifestyle discipline focus that has not changed for the past 20 years and is not far from the one outlined by my girl, Angela. It keeps me feeling like a million as well.

If you know and follow me, you know that I cycle outdoors for cardio in the spring thru the fall, I run on the treadmill when it’s raining, cold or wet and in the winter. I use strength training in the gym 2x weekly for 45-90 minutes, Pilates 4-5x week for 45-75 minutes and I will quickly jump into a hot yoga class when the temperature drops below 50 degrees.

Gina says, “I do yoga and Pilates.”

Pilates and Yoga, contrary to Angela’s choices,  (and particularly at an Intermediate to Advanced level) are the favorite body-weight resistance protocols for maintenance, strength, toning and body maintenance –  no matter what age you may find yourself.

The key to a lifestyle discipline is to start it, use it,  and stick to it.  Craft the discipline and the variables that will help you achieve your maintenance goals and fight hard with yourself to not get distracted as you give yourself permission to enjoy your life in the process.  Just 72 days till year end!  #IJS
