It doesn’t matter whether it is the first time you have experienced a Pilates class or the first time you have been introduced to a new variation on an old movement, the work is the same for every single person in the room.  We all work from the center and focus on getting the most out of our selves for that hour, that day.

Age, size, shape or ethnicity are also inconsequential to the work of Pilates, for all bodies are taught to learn to move through the frame of their own body.  Yes, a youthful body may have a bit more flexibility than a seasoned student, yet the work of engaging the abdominal will require the same energy and focused attention.

The legs of a 30-year old require just as much “encouragement” to finding an “oppositional stretch” from the center core as those of a 50-year old.  As it turns out, the moaning, groaning and sometimes twisted facial expressions are the same for everyone with tight or restricted hamstrings.

All bodies will sweat as we roll, stretch, stand and breathe.  It’s the beauty of Pilates movement and Pilates Mat classes.  For if it is not a new movement offered to the beginner student or class, the challenge may come from a new variation to experienced or advanced student.  Everyone sweats, stretches and feels better having completed it all.

Always, always, always we do it all with control and a smile.
