Whew! July was obviously a busy month, as I notice I have had to stop, take a pause to rest, regroup, recover, refresh my energy more than once in the past 30 days.

It’s noticeable how full the month has been, as my last blog entry was more than 30 days ago! Uh Oh! I know that if I don’t have the energy and enthusiasm to delight, excite and inspire my students, they will not get the best of my teaching and I won’t support them enough to have them feel the best about their own work.

One of the ways I use to escape is to lose myself in nature and the visual, sensory delight it brings. It’s one reason my apartment is such a complete mess. I drop things at the door, peel off layers and toss them in a corner and keep running out the door – out and into the open. My attitude is the mess will still be there when I get back. The light, sun and colorful brilliance of the day will be lost in a few precious hours.

Sometimes I jump on my inline skates with headphones on and ‘dance-skate’ and sing loudly.  Sometimes I jump on the treadmill and ‘rebound-run’ for a good 3 miles and sometimes I just ride as hard and as fast as I can trying to stay out of the way of the strollers out clearing their heads on the Riverwalk.

Yesterday’s morning teaching ran from 8am to 1pm with only a few minutes in between sessions for the door to close and open. I did nothing for and hour but watch color wave in the wind with the clouds (see the video below) and to clear the meal, rode my bike to continue to free the space in my head.

Today’s morning sessions were equally as full and spirited. I needed and wanted to hit the gym for some serious cardio and mindless, sweaty movement.

What’s the takeaway?

  1. Recognize your limits.
  2. Find a release valve that restores and replenishes you.
  3. Refresh thyself.
  4. Recover thyself.
  5. Return to action.

You cannot give good energy to another, if your own supply is stale.
